EMPTEES

Indie Labs claims to have been birthed out of the "world wide womb" by groovy design mongers, Matt Wigham & Eric Turner, who previously brought us the phenomenal DIY site, Big Cartel and they have added yet another project to their roster.

Emptees celebrates the graphic arts through t-shirt design and offers a "Tee of The Day" feature which promotes a new shirt everyday. There is also a forum where designers and consumers can chat about the intricacies of design, manufacturing and style.

With the popularity of other DIY sites like Etsy along with underground customizers like Neighborhoodies , T*Fodder, Threadless & Cafe*Press plus the bourgeoning customization sites of the larger corporate clothiers like Nike's ID, Puma's Mongolian Shoe BBQ & Vans Customs, it is easier than ever to create your individual stilo and separate yourself from the rest of the pack.

Hail Mary, Full Of GRACE...

Producer Ivor Guest has confirmed that Grace Jones has completed recording a new album entitled "Hurricane." Her return to the craft, after nearly two decades marks the tenth studio LP by Miss Jones and is scheduled to be released by Wall Of Sound Records on October 27th, 2008. Nick Hooker has directed the first video from the upcoming album. Other participants on the new album are mainstays Sly and Robbie, along with ambient uber genius Brian Eno, Level 42 cohort Wally Badarou, Tricky, Uzziah 'Sticky' Thompson, reggae legionaire Mikey 'Mao' Chung, Barry Reynolds, John Justin, Mescaleros famed Martin Slattery, cellist Philip Sheppard, son Paulo Goude, Robert Logan, Don-E and Afro-Beat pioneer Tony Allen with recording engineering duties by Cameron 'Engine' Craig.

"It's an absolute honor and privilege to be working with Grace," comments Mark Jones, managing director of Wall of Sound, in a statement. "No one has inspired more people whatever race, sex, colour or creed to be who they want to be and so much more." He adds, "Her new album will not only re-establish her as one of the world's most important artists but also introduce her to a new generation of music lovers".

Reportedly, she simply offered a "Grrrrr" when asked to comment on the new deal.

Grace performed a two hour concert in June of this year at Massive Attack's Meltdown festival in London where she performed four new cuts including "This Is Life" a web leaked slice of her latest project and did a retrospective of her catalog, from her early days at Studio 54 to her pop injected funk produced by Ex-Buggles' front man, Trevor Horn.

The sell-out crowd at London's Royal Festival Hall included Vivienne Westwood, Noel Fielding, Hot Chip, Har Mar Superstar and Peaches.

Jones' only festival performance this year will be an exclusive headline set on the second-from-last evening of the Secret Garden Party Festival, to be held July 24-27 in Huntingdon, England.

The other side of PRIDE

SD Pride 08':

A privileged 800+ rolled thru Happenstans Salon's private dance soiree' as MEGA was in FULL effect!

The turntable-roundtable of D.J.'s L/V and Myxzlplix rinsed the feral crowd of their inhibitions, between engaging live sets from home-town beyotch favorites L.D.R.& the Kates, Rachael Cantu & MC Flow, as the double digit minions of those without invitations, stairwell danced while they waited, hoping the Riff-Raff Patrol would have mercy on them and let them into the festivities...

Alas, they had no luck and were turned away by the droves, as they harshly learned: It isn't WHO you know-It's WHO cuts your muthafuckin' hair!

Rumours abound say it was the best party of this year's SD Pride Festival.

You can't doubt it when they're passing out in the alley and pissing in beer cans while MEGA is playing one of their best tag team sets, ever.

Legendary?

Maybe...

Until next year!

[Sorry, these are from the tele-cam and the resolution isn't fab but there will definitely be more added as we will undoubtedly get a slew pics from the peeps...]

Some People Have Real Problems...

“The Rock-afire Explosion” is the story of a small-town car salesman, an inventor, and an animatronic rock band, that quickly becomes an eccentric portrait of childhood memories, broken dreams, and the resilience of the human spirit.

With the closing of Showbiz Pizza Place in the early nineties, and the subsequent removal of the Rock-afire Explosion, a small but determined group of fans persisted with the hopes of reviving their fallen obsession.

It wasn’t until 2007, with the resurgence of the Rock-afire Explosion on YouTube with songs like “Miss New Booty,” “Hey There Delilah,” and “Love in This Club,” that the animatronic band found its way back into the public consciousness.

Chris Thrash, a car salesman from Phenix City, Alabama who recently purchased a Rock-afire Explosion, has led the charge with his inventive programming and clever song choice and along with Aaron Fechter, creator of the Rock-afire Explosion and sole employee of Creative Engineering Incorporated, has worked closely with his fans and in conjunction with his starsof.com website, with the hopes of revitalizing what was once a 300 employee, 20 million dollar per-year industry.

Don't get it twisted, vintage animatronics like Disney's Country Bear Jamboree, The Enchanted Tiki Room and & America Sings were definitely unforgettable attractions at their world famous theme parks but I highly doubt I'd dedicate my life to their return...

If I was going to geek out, it would more likely be in homage to Monsanto's Adventure Thru Innerspace.

Music With A Purpose

Southern Cali's Grande Dame of Hip-Hop, Miki Vale has dedicated a major amount of her artistic prowess to the aid of those in need. Her latest charitable endeavor is called The Upliftment Project, which was founded to raise awareness towards the desperate and displaced people of the world. Through private donations and benefit concerts, the project hopes to bring an educated consciousness, in regard to the ongoing genocide in many oppressed & war torn countries such as Darfur, Myanmar, Iraq and The Congo.

The Upliftment Project is also utilized locally, by offering their assets to assist the homeless in San Diego County, giving less fortunate individuals the ability to discover their own power. As of late, their efforts have raised over $2,000, all of which has been donated to the International Rescue Committee which provides humanitarian aid through their vast network of first responders, relief workers, healthcare providers, educators, community leaders, activists, and volunteers, worldwide.

This Friday at The Kava Lounge, Visionaries member Dannu of Writer's Block, will host a massive show which features Grammy Award Nominated artist Mystic, who will be performing live for the cause, along side SDMA favorites Deep Rooted, Sleeping Giant Artist herself Miki Vale, Anti-Citizens, DJ's Cleancut and Hektik plus Katzgroove from Satch-Boogie's highly respected Illfonix crew, who tear it up live and on their weekly Jazz 88.3 radio show, which is not to be missed.

Stylusts

Oh, and while I was checking Stylusts blog my damn self, I found another mixtape that has some fine layers and crafty segues in it.

I'm not too fond of the constant audio advertising for the club it was made for called Elsewhere, yet it's worth being put out a few times more than you'd like, to reap the eargasmic rewards found in their interestingly designed mix.

Who Wants Jell-O?

"Palace of Fine Arts/2006"-Liz Hickok

I remember when I went to art school for a second, literally, I had an instructor named Slater Barron, who ironically taught an Art/Media class. She was truly an interesting woman. In her spare time she was an artist/sculptor who used dryer lint to form life sized pieces and portraits, most of which had irony or sympathy as their subject matter. She would enlist all of her students to bring their dryer lint to school for her projects. At one point, she even gave specific instructions to dry like colors together, to insure the deepest colors possible. As I recall, my favorite of her past "lint-stallations" had a complete steak & lobster dinner in it...

Mixed media artist Liz Hickok has again pushed the already shaky boundaries of artistic medium with her Jell-O molded San Francisco cityscapes.

Her work description from the website:
This project consists of photographs and video, which depict various San Francisco landscapes. I make the landscapes by constructing scale models of the architectural elements which I use to make molds. I then cast the buildings in Jell-O. Similar to making a movie set, I add backdrops, which I often paint, and elements such as mountains or trees, and then I dramatically light the scenes from the back or underneath. The Jell-O sculptures quickly decay, leaving the photographs and video as the remains.

Just when you think you've seen it all?
