Au Revoir, Bettie...

LOS ANGELES [AP] – Bettie Page, the 1950s secretary-turned-model whose controversial photographs in skimpy attire or none at all helped set the stage for the 1960s sexual revolution, died Thursday. She was 85.Born April 22, 1923, in Nashville, Tenn., Page said she grew up in a family so poor "we were lucky to get an orange in our Christmas stockings. "The family included three boys and three girls, and Page said her father molested all of the girls. After the Pages moved to Houston, her father decided to return to Tennessee and stole a police car for the trip. He was sent to prison, and for a time Betty lived in an orphanage. In her teens she acted in high school plays, going on to study drama in New York and win a screen test from 20th Century Fox before her modeling career took off.

Page was placed on life support last week after suffering a heart attack in Los Angeles and never regained consciousness, said her agent, Mark Roesler. He said he and Page's family agreed to remove life support. Before the heart attack, Page had been hospitalized for three weeks with pneumonia."She captured the imagination of a generation of men and women with her free spirit and unabashed sensuality," Roesler said. "She is the embodiment of beauty. "Page, who was also known as Betty, attracted national attention with magazine photographs of her sensuous figure in bikinis and see-through lingerie that were quickly tacked up on walls in military barracks, garages and elsewhere, where they remained for years. Her photos included a centerfold in the January 1955 issue of then-fledgling Playboy magazine, as well as controversial sadomasochistic poses. "I think that she was a remarkable lady, an iconic figure in pop culture who influenced sexuality, taste in fashion, someone who had a tremendous impact on our society," Playboy founder Hugh Hefner told The Associated Press on Thursday. "She was a very dear person."

Page mysteriously disappeared from the public eye for decades, during which time she battled mental illness and became a born-again Christian. After resurfacing in the 1990s, she occasionally granted interviews but refused to allow her picture to be taken."I don't want to be photographed in my old age," she told an interviewer in 1998. "I feel the same way with old movie stars.... It makes me sad. We want to remember them when they were young."The 21st century indeed had people remembering her just as she was. She became the subject of songs, biographies, Web sites, comic books, movies and documentaries. A new generation of fans bought thousands of copies of her photos, and some feminists hailed her as a pioneer of women's liberation.

Gretchen Mol portrayed her in 2005's "The Notorious Bettie Page" and Paige Richards had the role in 2004's "Bettie Page: Dark Angel." Page herself took part in the 1998 documentary "Betty Page: Pinup Queen."Hefner said he last saw Page when he held a screening of "The Notorious Bettie Page" at the Playboy Mansion. He said she objected to the fact that the film referred to her as "notorious," but "we explained to her that it referred to the troubled times she had and was a good way to sell a movie." Page's career began one day in October 1950 when she took a respite from her job as a secretary in a New York office for a walk along the beach at Coney Island. An amateur photographer named Jerry Tibbs admired the 27-year-old's firm, curvy body and asked her to pose.

Looking back on the career that followed, she told Playboy in 1998: "I never thought it was shameful. I felt normal. It's just that it was much better than pounding a typewriter eight hours a day, which gets monotonous. "Nudity didn't bother her, she said, explaining: "God approves of nudity. Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, they were naked as jaybirds. "In 1951, Page fell under the influence of a photographer and his sister who specialized in S&M. They cut her hair into the dark bangs that became her signature and posed her in spiked heels and little else. She was photographed with a whip in her hand, and in one session she was spread-eagled between two trees, her feet dangling."I thought my arms and legs would come out of their sockets," she said later.Moralists denounced the photos as perversion, and Sen. Estes Kefauver of Tennessee, Page's home state, launched a congressional investigation.

Page quickly retreated from public view, later saying she was hounded by Federal agents who waved her nude photos in her face. She also said she believed that, at age 34, her days as "the girl with the perfect figure" were nearly over. She moved to Florida in 1957 and married a much younger man, as an early marriage to her high school sweetheart had ended in divorce. Her second marriage also failed, as did a third, and she suffered a nervous breakdown. In 1959, she was lying on a sea wall in Key West when she saw a church with a white neon cross on top. She walked inside and became a born-again Christian. After attending Bible school, she wanted to serve as a missionary but was turned down because she had been divorced. Instead, she worked full-time for evangelist Billy Graham's ministry.

A move to Southern California in 1979 brought more troubles. She was arrested after an altercation with her landlady, and doctors who examined her determined she had acute schizophrenia. She spent 20 months in a state mental hospital in San Bernardino. A fight with another landlord resulted in her arrest, but she was found not guilty because of insanity. She was placed under state supervision for eight years. "She had a very turbulent life," Todd Mueller, a family friend and autograph seller, told The Associated Press on Thursday. "She had a temper to her. "Mueller said he first met Page after tracking her down in the 1990s and persuaded her to do an autograph signing event. He said she was a hit and sold about 3,000 autographs, usually for $200 to $300 each. "Eleanor Roosevelt, we got $40 to $50.... Bettie Page outsells them all," he told The AP last week...

Karma is a BBBloody Glove...

LAS VEGAS [AP] — A broken O.J. Simpson has been sentenced to at least 15 years in prison for a Las Vegas hotel armed robbery by a judge who rejected his apology and said, "It was much more than stupidity."

Simpson stood stone-faced Friday when Judge Jackie Glass quickly rattled off his punishment after he pleaded with her that he didn't mean to steal from anybody when he tried to retrieve memorabilia.

He appeared ready to break down in tears as he told that he was "sorry and confused" before going into a rambling and emotional 5-minute declaration.

"I didn't want to steal anything from anyone ... I'm sorry, sorry," he said.

Glass ruled before sentencing that Simpson cannot be freed on bail pending possible appeal.

O.J. Simpson had apologized to the judge at his sentencing hearing and said he didn't mean to steal from anybody when he tried to retrieve memorabilia.

Simpson made this statement before sentencing Friday in his armed robber case in a soft voice that was somewhat hoarse.

He appeared ready to break down in tears as he told Clark County District Court Judge Jackie Glass that he was "sorry and confused" before going into a rambling and emotional 5-minute declaration.

"I didn't want to steal anything from anyone ... I'm sorry, sorry," he said.

Judge Glass ruled before sentencing that Simpson cannot be freed on bail pending possible appeal.

ODE for ODETTA

Last night, folk singer/civil rights pioneer Odetta passed on from complications related to heart disease and kidney failure, on New Years Eve she would have been 78...

With her classically trained voice, she championed the plight of slaves, farm workers, housewives, miners and wash women- black and white alike, as she showcased American folk music, jazz, negro spirituals, blues, prose and work songs in her moving performances...

Often refered to as "The Voice Of The Civil Rights Movement," Odetta was penned the "Queen of American Folk Music" by none other than Martin Luther King Jr. and was awarded The National Medal of the Arts, in 1999 by President Bill Clinton...

Her musical legacy was appreciated by and influenced the likes of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Harry Belafonte, Janis Joplin and Tennesee Ernie Ford, to name a few...

Who Put The BUY In Albino?

Albino's have always been a rarity and these colorable D.I.Y. t-shirts are no exception.

Behind the scenes at ALBINO lies a husband and wife team. They both work in design, textiles, fashion and software development. This experience has enabled them to envision and develop a device that makes colouring-in T-shirts easier.

The result has been their "patent pending" backing, which they have applied to a colour-in-able T-shirt that children can complete with considerably more success and ease than in the past. Straight out of the box, with no preparation and with little or no help from an adult, the ALBINO product removes many technical obstacles that would usually prevent a child [or adult] from being creative within this medium.

The shirts are a little pricey, most sell for around 29 Euros each yet the design and theme of each item is unique and definitely boutique oriented.

They also offer a basic color palette of markers, specifically designed for this application which you can also purchase at their site...

Dolemite vs. Myxzlplix

Shortly after our previous post, I recall the grand moment I met the legendary Rudy Ray Moore while DJing at the 2004 Comic Con. Not only did I meet the man, I was his DJ at arms. Thank god there was a mic that day. He freestyled off the cuff, smooth as ever while I played doubles of Joe Budden's "Pump it Up." A truly amazing, and completely spontaneous moment. He was a gentleman and a professional and I was honored to be there. R.I.P. Dolemite a.k.a. Rudy Ray Moore.

BLACK is BOOTY-FULL...

On the heels of Dolemite's new movie and the unfortunate passing of the title's original icon, Rudy Ray Moore, comes the modern day homage to Blaxploitation's finest, Black Dynamite.

At first look, I thought it was a parody and not a real film yet one stop to IMDb and that notion was quashed.

Synopsis:
African-American action legend Black Dynamite goes after "The Man" for killing his brother Jimmy, pumping heroin into local orphanages and flooding the ghetto with hopped-up malt liquor. Black Dynamite was the one hero willing to fight The Man all the way from the blood-soaked city streets to the hallowed halls of the Honky House.

It's complete with all the usual 70's Afro B-Film references, Karate-Pimps-Vigilantes-Drug Dealers-Car Crashes & Bitches Galore!

What's especially stellar about this tribute is the cast:
Michael Jai White of Spawn fame [who also wrote the screenplay,] Tommy Davidson of In Living Color, Talk Show luminary Arsenio Hall, Singer Brian McKnight, NBA Alumni John Salley, Mad TV's Nicole Sullivan, Comedic Genius Kym Whitley, Bokeem Woodbine of Dead Presidents and Mykelti Williamson of Waiting To Exhale.

Although less politically charged than the seminal films of Gordon Parks or Melvin Van Peebles, Black Dynamite is sure to inspire the younger set to explore their works and the fine soundtracks that accompanied them.

I'm not too down with the film's Music Supervisor or the Director, neither have a great legacy behind their craft yet I have hope it will all work out in the end...

GIMME THE LIGHT...

Lighting fixtures, Legos, and inflatables have never before converged.
Now, Chile’s Rodrigo Alonso Schramm, of Blightster & Musuc fame, gives us Modulair, customized inflatable components, which you assemble to create attractive hanging lights. By combining any of four modules [triangle, square, pentagon and hexagon], you can build a lamp to fit your individual style and taste. Of course, no matter what you do with them, Modulair lights maintain their futuristic ice crystal appearance and lend a soft light to any environment.

[The designer in his Musuc, the wearable sleeping bag]

Schramm, the Chilean graphic designer, has worked for many years in the advertising and design industry, developing solutions for important national and international brands such as Renault, Lucky Strike, Warner Bros, Sony, and many others. With a high inclination towards industrial design, he began his object creation, in which functionality, aesthetics, graphics, and the visual virtuosity are always present.

After living in England, Spain and Holland, he explored the idea of Company-Design as "inseparable friends", overturning his interest in using design focused on concrete and authentic proposals while developing and producing in Chile together with national industry. This idea caused the 2003 creation of Design Studio Müsuc: a laboratory to create objects that "make you fall in love at first sight"- objects that shout happiness, that sample our rabid current-ness, articles which are able to represent people or companies that are constantly seeking difference. Thus, each Rodrigo design is characterized by "shouting" amongst others, generating always a happy commentary & never being unnoticed...

POP N' LOCK

Pop-Up retail stores are the latest rage. It all seemed to begin in 2003 when ill fated Song Airlines, in need of a stiff branding campaign for their bare bones operation sponsored by Delta Airlines opened their month long, temporary space in New York's stylish SoHo neighborhood, near Dean & Deluca and The Mercer Hotel.

Then Target opened their Isaac Mizrahi Pop-Up Store at Rockefeller Center & eBay delved into the hipster clad Guerilla Marketing scene, eager to get some real-world exposure, keen on shedding its "flea market" image -- invited six interior designers to furnish an entire New York City penthouse. The catch? Designers had a limited budget and could only use furniture and accessories purchased through eBay.com. The result turned out to be a mix of funky and chic, worthy of an upscale store.

Now everyone is getting into the game.

Last night, Diesel opened their Pop-Up store at South Coast Plaza in Orange County and Paper Magazine will open a 24 hour pop up store tonight-Friday, November 7, 6 pm, through Saturday, November 8, 6 pm. The 2nd 24-Hour Department Store takes place at 8873 Sunset Boulevard, cross street is San Vicente.

Just confirmed, Slow & Steady Wins The Race will have the infamous under $100 wedding dress available for purchase. Other "on the verge" designer/boutique highlights include Band of Outsiders, Confederacy, and Rodarte, while Converse will be sponsoring 24 bands over the 24 hours- Lady Tigra, Entrance, The Chapin Sisters & MEGA favourite Daedelus are all scheduled to perform.

Saturday Night Special/Rock Solid

Hands On Records was launched with my hopes of changing the landscape of the music world. Running label and pressing vinyl in this day and age is not easy. Although Hands On was shorted lived, plenty was learned and was proud of the effort. It was also a great experience working with one of the best MCs around who is also a top notch DJ, Unite. Our 1st and only single received mixed reviews. It's not a great record, but nothing to be ashamed of either. How many DJs have the balls to put shit out? So out of the vaults, here is the single we unleashed. DJ Myxzlplix

RIVA STARR JACKS U!

Riva madness” is the phrase. One of the stars of Claude von Stroke’s superhot Dirtybird Records. The remixer of remix king Armand van Helden, with the upcoming J’taime on Southern Fried Records.

Born in a junkyard, his father a Ford Capri and his mother a Memory Moog.

And his first words? “Word up, motherfuckers!”

It’s no wonder the world has paid attention to Riva Starr from the get-go. Born Italian, bought up in seedy bars on a diet of soul, funk and analogue synths, for the last few years he’s been running with the bad crowd - bleeping and blurting with the bad gangs. Jesse Rose’s Frontroom label. Dirtybird. Southern Fried. Collaborations with London’s Batty Bass scene.

...and he is the next victim of our random questions…

Who or what has been the biggest influence
Everything from 50’s till now… enough?

Which one do you enjoy the most, Djing or producing?
I really like both… but sometimes I prefer to lock myself in my studio for a bit and concentrate on my analog gear to get some nu soundz and ideas!

What do you see as your main strengths as a producer?
I think that Riva Starr style is a fresh mixture of tech-wonky sounds with some tribal influences as well (I got plenty of side project where I do experiments crossovering music’s from the world with electronic sounds)

What makes a party good & bad?
The feeling that the dj manage to build with the audience… that’s the main thing.

Do you sample, use old records, listen to them, or how does your producing process go?
I do both, it really depends. Sometimes I create all the sounds (also the drums one) sometimes I take records from my 5000 records collection and take some samples (For example LA CONGA and MARIA)

Which is more appealing to you while djing - to dig out a relatively old track, or play the newest release?
I don’t care about playing new tracks, sometimes you play old tunes and people still think that is a new one , the main thing are the effects on the dancefloor.

Frankie Knuckles' Response...

Recently, rumors have been circulating on the web that one of House Music's Godfathers, Frankie Knuckles, had to have his leg amputated due to negative complications from diabetes...

Here is his response to these issues via The Defected Records Message Board:

Recently there has been a lot of scuttle-butt going around on the internet about me and my health. Apparently, someone perpetrating that they are a friend or someone close to me felt it necessary to use me and my PERSONAL HEALTH in an open forum for public discussion. I feel violated and disrespected.

Let me say this; Anyone that knows me personally or, anyone that I’ve been in close proximity to on a personal level will tell you that I’ve never been anything less than a gentleman. Oh, I can be as silly as the next one but, never disrespectful, mean or, malicious. However, I am an intensely private individual and don’t take kindly to having to explain myself.

But, to put these rumors to rest, here’s what’s been going on;

Almost 10 years ago I broke my right foot. And instead of sitting still and allowing it to mend properly, I returned to the road and continued to travel during the healing process.

Well, the foot never really healed properly and over the past 10 years continued to give me great difficulty. Throughout that period I developed a disease in my foot called osteomialitis (it’s a disease of the bone).

For years I worked with my doctors to combat this illness and they informed me (to a degree) that all this work was pretty much the equivalent of putting a bandaid on the situation. Eventually, it was going to get the better of me and I’d be left with no other choice but to have my foot amputated.

Well, I praise my doctors for helping me put up a good fight. But what was inevitable came to fruition on July 3rd. I didn’t lose my leg but I did lose my foot. it was necessary because the disease was beginning to travel up my leg, threatening my heart.

I didn’t have a problem losing my foot. After all, I still have another. But I did have a problem losing my life. This is the only one I have.

This disease I developed wasn’t diabetic related. The fact that I have diabetes may have compounded it to a degree (in it’s latter stages). But you’ll all be happy to know that I’m doing very well. I’m 1000% better now that my body is rid of the disease and I’m no longer living in pain. I lived with that pain for almost 10 years and most of you never knew it. And you weren’t supposed to.

We’ve shared entirely too many good times over the years in every city and country I visited around the globe. I did my job and tried to remain respectful of the job at hand when it came to coming and playing for you. And when this thing got to be too much for me, I did what was necessary to correct it. But it was evident that I was going to lose my foot. And that was/is a private matter. One that I share with my family and very close friends. I just wish that instead of someone opening a forum about it here online, that I would’ve been trusted well enough by everyone to know that I would make a statement about it.

Just know that I’ve been doing everything in my power to get better and turn this situation around. I can’t thank you all enough for your prayers and well-wishes. Your blessings were well received. For the past 3 months I’ve been here at home, I’ve managed to rise every morning with a smile on my face and endure every obstacle that’s been put in my path, to get back to where I need to be. On a dance floor with you. I can’t thank you all enough for the love and respect you all continue to give me.

I am a very fortunate man.

Maximum Love & Infinite Respect~
